The U.S. soldiers were fighting on the way to a dangerous mission in Afghanistan, to stay on terror. Victims, they were places where no one expected: Not near Kandahar, but at Frankfurt airport. The terror, it looks like all the currently available information, has arrived in Germany. And the circumstances of the attack show a completely new quality of threat.
Still, investigators fall into many areas in the dark. It is certain that the 21-year-old suspect does not enter from an Arab country while traces left behind. The young man does have a migrant background, but lived most of his life in Germany - in a suburb of Frankfurt. Unobtrusive, possibly to the outside fully integrated.
Yet he turned down the country in which he lived, from apparently increasingly radicalized in isolation from their home PC, inspired and incited by radical Islamists.
And may he acted entirely alone, without organizational support of terrorist networks. A ticking time bomb that exploded on Wednesday. He also acted very carefully planned and targeted: Just a jam his gun prevented that more soldiers have been taken.
The attack on Frankfurt speechless and angry. And it can be frightening. Now, falling in the face of new vulnerabilities of activism and panic, however, would be the wrong reaction. This would certainly play the radical Islamists in his hands.
We should confidently stand by our liberal way of life and be proud of being recognized as an open and tolerant country. That is not to be naive. We must defend ourselves rigorously against those who call openly to hatred and violence. And against those that can be radicalized and terrorist be.
In the fight against them, we are not powerless. Even the 21-year-old suspect has left its mark - on the Internet. The security forces must be able to recognize these signs early. And we all need to be attentive, show courage and help to defend our way of life.
